Chandigarh, also known as “The City Beautiful,” is one of the modern cities of India designed by the French architect Le Corbusier. The city got its name from a temple, “Chandi Mandir,” located near the town. Eight thousand years ago, the Harappan civilization developed in the area. While previously belonging to the state of Punjab in 1966, the city became the capital of two states, Punjab, and Haryana, and was declared a Union Territory. NIFAA started its Chandigarh branch in 2009 when Sh. Gaurav Sharma, a budding drama director and versatile artist, was appointed as the first president of NIFAA in the union territory. Under his command, NIFAA organized many street plays in Sector 17 and other city parts to spread awareness about social evils. NIFAA Chandigarh organized an Indo-Japan Musical concert in the auditorium of Punjab Kala Bhavan, in which Ms Elena Tomioko presented Japanese and Indian melodies on the harp. Gaurav Sharma, President of the Chandigarh branch, also participated in exchange programs with Mauritius. Later, Ms Armaan Singh, a young, energetic social worker-led Chandigarh branch, started many social welfare initiatives in the city. NIFAA organized the Lohri Beti Ke Naam program during her tenure as president. NIFAA donated Ceiling fans to the Government School of Khuda Jassu, Chandigarh, and volunteers also reached slum areas of Chandigarh and did many activities for the welfare of the children. In 2019, Mr Taranpal Singh took responsibility for taking the NIFAA vision forward in the city and was appointed president of NIFAA Chandigarh. He participated in many initiatives of NIFAA Headquarters. Under the Samvedna campaign, NIFAA Chandigarh, with the help of Mr Rakesh Sanger, organized a blood donation camp in Chandigarh. NIFAA Chandigarh unit in the year 2022 has selected Sh Rakesh Sengar as the president of Chandigarh, and the new executive is doing exemplary work in the field of voluntary blood donation.
