Lohri Beti Ke Naam

Generally, the birth of a male child is accepted very well in our society. However, after numerous social reforms, there has been a slight aversion to accepting the birth of a female child in the family. In the 21st century, it is high time we eliminate this critical thinking and start accepting both babies equally. NIFAA began a fantastic initiative by celebrating the birth of a girl child through a collective Lohri and Kuan Poojan Programme. In 2006, NIFAA started celebrating the mass-level Lohri function by inviting parents with their newborn girls to a place and performing Lohri rituals. In our first attempt, only 117 parents came forward to change this discrimination, and the number kept increasing yearly. In 2014, NIFAA celebrated the Lohri of approximately 1,00,000 girls; to date, the number has reached 7,00,000. This superb initiative has changed people’s minds as the increased sex ratio can be seen in girl children, which went up by 857 in 2006 to 914 in 2018, against 1000 boys. The celebration of Lohri and Kuan Poojan was earlier limited to the birth of a male child. Still, with consistent efforts of NIFAA, this discriminatory custom is coming to an end, and a large section of society has started welcoming the birth of a girl child and celebrating Lohri and Kuan Poojan on the delivery of a female.
